My Return!
« on: August 17, 2004, 11:36:07 AM »
Hey everyone!

I am finally back, and I am so excited ... well "I just can't hide it!" The site as you have likely noticed by now is back up to date and fully functionining.  I want to thank everyone for their participation in the forum and for keeping thins running smoothly while I was gone.

Ok, so I know I promised you all "the biggest surprise is 49ers history" ... so here it is: My vacataion, that I just returned from, was to 49ers headquarters to watch two day's worth of 49ers practices.  It was without a doubt the best experience of my life, and I can't even explain to all of you just how good it was!

I am now in the process of compiling reports on what I saw, and my experiences, please be patient but feel free to ask me questions in the forum if there is something urgent you want to know!

B: You lucky dog! I'm getting the NFL ticket on Wednesday, do you know if preseason games get shown live on it? I'm really looking forward to your "realistic" analysis on things. One quickie, by going and attending, did you come away with a more positive and confident impression that better days are ahead?

You should get the games because the ticket comes with NFL Network I believe... even without that you should be able to get them on just regular direct tv channels.

Hardly a quickie question... am I more positive?  I still think this team will win about 6 games this season, I am however surprisingly impressed with what I saw from particular players.  As a whole though, I still think there are some big gaps for us to fill.

Core:  The preseason games aren't on the Ticket nor are nationally televised games like MNF and the Thursday/Sunday night games.  Neither are the playoffs.  The preseason games are on the NFL Network, channel 212.  You'll either need to keep basic cable for local stations or sign up for local stations through DirecTV if they are available in your area.  PM me if you've got any questions.  Congrats on the Ticket!  You'll soon see it's the ONLY way to watch the NFL!

Core Also, the games on the NFL network are tape-delayed so bust out the VCR or TiVO.

Bryan: I am very happy for you !
Were you impressed with headquarters and did you get to meet with anyone who could answer your questions? For example did anyone explain in detail why they feel they couldn't open TC up to the public in Santa Clara this year and will they for next year ?
Did you go to the Game on Sat. ?

N4L & fearyaks: thanks guys, I just got fed up with having to settle for listening on the internet to 3/4 of the 49er games, I'm putting my money where my mouth is now.

Thanks guys!

TIM - I couldn't get to the game unfortunately but I did see it, and I'll try to add my thoughts on that as I do with my training camp report.

As for my questions etc about the facility.

The facility its self is absolutely stunning.  There really isn't anything quite like walking into it the first time.

Parking on the immediate grounds is limitted, but right across the street there is more parking than you could imagine, it could easily accomodate 4000 fans.  There is tons of public tranportation there too.

There is seating for about ~2000 people around the fields. There is not much space around them, but buidling taller bleachers, and slightly wider ones, I could see the place accomodating 4-5000 fans quite readily.  (Of course I did really enjoy the intimacy of the whole thing, which I'm not sure you would get with that many people there, unless there were VIP passes too).

I think security might be one issue that was holding the team back too.

I'll have more later.

Bryan:  Welcome to Northern California!  I hope you enjoyed your visit.  The weather has been awesome.

I have a few questions for you:

I have heard that DC Willie Robinson is the "bad cop" to Dennis Erickson's "good cop."  In other words, Robinson is loud, critical, demanding, etc., while Erickson is passive, encouraging, etc.  Did you see this?

Does the team seem disciplined?  Easy going?  All business?  Focused?

Is there any player(s) who looks like a man among boys?  (I remember seeing Terrell Owens in camp at Stockton, and he just seemed physically superior to everyone else on the field...faster, smoother, stronger, more endurance, more effort).

Which quarterback looked like the best leader, in command of the huddle and line of scrimmage?

Nice little perk Bryan, looking forward to the reports. Did anyone (someone other than players) really draw your attention? Like individual position coaches that we may not know much about yet?

sure D :)

TANK  - Thanks :) Robinson is definately more vocal on the field than DEER, but the 'big' coaches typically stand in the middle of the field, which isn't far, but is farther from the stand so I may have missed something.

Discipline is there.  Some players like Ced and Woods are above and beyond, same with Lloyd they really don't stop working... they all spring between different rotations on the field... but they are having a good time out there too, trash talking and stuff.

Jamie Winborn really stood out.  So did BY (of course).  Jamal Robertson looked surprisingly good, and Barlow was hitting the holes very well.

STL - Tim Lappano - RB coach is very vocal and constantly drilling the backs as to the right holes to hit.

Dan Quinn DL coach is very involved pushing the players through the drills.

Gregg Smith OL is very knowledgeable and drills the OL on formations and shifts non stop.

The martial arts specialist whose name evades me right now is very intense too.

Great News Bryan,

How is Woods "above and beyond" if he hasn't really practiced since August 2nd?

Woods practiced one morning when I was there...

The thing about Woods is in between rotations when he is given rest time, he just sprints 40, 50 yards at a time... that's his break.  Ced sits there catching passes during his break, and Lloyd works with the martial arts specialist.

You seem encouraged and invigorated by your "saw for yourself" perspective. Do you like what you see and do you think we may have something special happening with this team?

I feel like we're in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind and you got picked to go on the journey .....

"I envy you"

I think cornerwriters should be sent next season  :D

lol twins if i could get you all in that'd be awesome!

I am certainly encouraged and invigorated, but I am still realistic with what I expect for the season.  I still want to see better pass protection (particulary from our second stringers), much better pass rush, and our third downs still need major improvement.

You haven't actually told us to what extent you participated and for how long. Were you there a week or? Did you watch 2 a days or?

And how were you able to determine the lack of a pass rush and protection from practice, or is that your perspective on the preseason game?

Hey, you didn't think you were ever going to get down to TC and you did that, so I'm believing that you will be able to exercise your extensive promotional skills and ask the 49ers to bring us down there.

What's the worse that can happen?

Besides we now have JNEW talking about this site, how good is that?

I was there for two days, 3 practices...

lack of pass rush from the scrimages I saw.. they can't hit the QB, but they can certainly rush him.  The d was also following victim to the screen over and overa gain.

Jnew is as awesome in person as he is on the web!

Hey everyone, you can download images from the trip at

http://trevcorner.tripod.com/0trip.html

I am trying to conserve bandwidth by hosting the zip file on this page.  If you run into any problems please let me know.  Please note I did have to reduce colour and image size in order to make this feasible.

Bryan - depending on how many images/how much space, I've got some bandwidth I can spare if you need image hosting.

Aloha Bryan! Did you get in from your snarly letter to Niner powers to be, which was one that I beseeched folks to write?  Or how? As you know, I also beseeched the Niner PR department  to give VIP passes to administrators of Niner Message Boards, such as yourself. Frankly, I do not care if I had a role in any of this. I just want to know what we need to do for next year and thank you for your comments this year!

Just think, if I had not had to cancel my trip at the last minute we could have met up at practice!  Also, I had extra tickets for the game itself and you could have met some of the Cafe Utne characters!

But I believe all that parking across the street is mostly reserved for Great America Amusement Park . They may be able to make a deal with the Park to use their lot but I don't know if the Park would go along.(Great America may need it ). And I don't know if the City would give it's blessing on the extra traffic in an already bad traffic area? However I do believe all these concerns COULD be worked out if enough attention is given to the process.

Wow. Bryan. Thats is great. I would really like to know the scoop on our future QB's. How did dorsey really look in practice? Does he have "it" and does the organization really feel he is the future? Also, comment on Pickett. I am a huge fan of his and want to know what the organization might be thinking about him. They both looked good in the Raider game, but that was only one game.

Yer right about that lot belonging to Great America, but the day I was there, there wasn't another car within a half mile of where we parked.

There is ample parking... people park there without permission and go to 4949 but you are right they may have to rent it or work something out... judging by how empty the lot was it wouldn't be an issue I don't think.

I believe the city would love the revenue it would bring in... traffic was a non issue in the area.

lol D?

Diehard - first read the report in the admin section.

Dorsey looked good, but I think he might be dumping the ball a little too often, I think he needs to be slightly quicker through his reads.

Pickett I think looked like he might edge out Doman... Doman knows the offense better, and makes things happen with his feet, but Pickett's mechanics (except for a slightly awkward release) seem to be better.  Stronger arm for sure, better size...

anything more specifically after reading the article?
